Getting lab work done
Once you have either:
A.) Seen a provider who requested labs, or B.) Decided to complete a self-ordered test, please follow these steps to complete your lab visit:
Fill out the Lab Questionnaire:
- Go to Health e-Messenger, select Messages → New Message → Self-Ordered Testing
- Complete and submit the questionnaire
Pick up a take-home kit:
- Available in the health center laboratory lobby and follow the enclosed instructions
Schedule an appointment (if blood needs to be drawn): appointments are required for all blood draws.
Frequently Asked Questions
What are the fasting instructions?
Do not eat or drink anything other than water for at least 10 hours before your blood is drawn. Be well-hydrated at the time of your blood draw.
How do I get my results?
Test results are delivered electronically via secure messaging
- You’ll receive an email directing you to Health e-Messenger
- If a test is positive, a medical professional will contact you via secure message or phone
To view results in Health e-Messenger:
- Log in to Health e-Messenger
- Go to Visits/Allergies/Medication/Labs; click Labs

How much does it cost?
- UC SHIP or CruzCare plans include some no-cost in-house laboratory tests ordered for illness and injury visits.
- Lab charges are automatically billed to your MyUCSC account
UC SHIP details:
- If labs are done at the Student Health Center, your deductible is waived
- If labs are done outside, your $300 deductible applies before UC SHIP pays 85%

CruzCare or Other Insurance:
- Full charges and a handling fee apply for reference lab tests sent off-site
- CruzCare does not cover send-out labs or handling fees
- We do not bill private insurance
Can my outside provider order lab tests?
We can perform most tests ordered by your outside provider. The lab order must include:
- Ordering provider’s name and NPI or license number
- Order date (Standing Orders must have valid from/to dates)
- Provider’s phone and fax numbers
- Patient’s name and date of birth
- Tests requested
Orders are valid for 6 months and can only be used once, unless marked as a Standing Order.
How do I order Self-Ordered STI tests?
Visit the STI and self-ordered testing section of the sexual health webpage. All of the instructions are there for you, the process is discreet and convenient!
How do I order a Wellness Panel?
You can schedule it yourself on Health e-Messeger, or if you are having symptoms, please make an appointment with a provider.

How can I get a TB screening for an internship, volunteer position, or work-study job?
This process is different from the one used for new student TB requirements. Follow these instructions instead:
If you have UC SHIP:
- A TB blood test is 100% covered
- Use Health e-Messenger to request a TB screening:
- Log in with your Gold password
- Go to Messages → New Message → TB Risk Assessment for Programs → Job Requiring TB Clearance → Volunteering
- Complete and send the form
- You will receive follow-up instructions via secure message within two weeks
If you don’t have UC SHIP:
- Costs will depend on your insurance plan
- Ask your off-campus provider for a screening
